The first project in the first year studio at PennDesign is the team-based pavilion project. The Hinge Pavilion was created by a design/ build team that also included Angela Huang, Lei Yu, and Joey Park with Simon Kim as the studio critic. Taking an aggregation approach, Hinge Pavilion is composed of interchangeable and kinetic parts. The base component of the Hinge Pavilion is a kaleidocycle- a geometry made of 6 tetrahedrons connected at hinges. Connected these variable kaleidocycles with magnets, the Hinge Pavilion invites interactivity and play resulting in a constantly evolving form.
